Sir,
On the 24th. July His Majesty's Chargé
d'Affaires at Peking telegraphed to His Majesty's Consul-General at
Canton as follows:-
The Corps Diplomatique have been requested by the
Chinese Government to adopt measures to prevent vessels
of their nationals being employed for the conveyance of
arms and munitions of war by the rebels. British Shipping
interests should accordingly be informed orally and
confidentially that in the event of their being engaged
in such service, claims for damages arising therefrom
would not receive support of His Majesty's Legation.
2. Mr. Jamieson forwarded me a copy of this tele-
-gram by mail on the same date and I have the honour to inform you
that on the 30th. July the Harbour Master reported to me that,
under my instructions, he had personally warned all the firms on
the attached list, i.e. all owers and agents of registered British
ships in this Colony, in the sense of ir. Alston's telerem.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient, humble servant,
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
